Salzburg Zoo – Experience animal worlds from all over the world up close
Around 1,600 animals representing some 150 species live in spacious, natural-looking enclosures. On a varied tour, visitors discover the animal worlds of Eurasia, Africa, South America and Australia, and gain fascinating insights into the animals’ behaviour and habitats.
Among the special highlights are the lively white-handed gibbons, as well as the imposing white rhinos and African penguins. On the way to the lion house, the vast African savannah opens up – complete with a stunning view of the Alps.
An experience for the whole family
Young visitors in particular will find plenty to enjoy at Salzburg Zoo: pygmy goats in the petting zoo and the popular alpacas can be fed with special food available at the ticket office. Several playgrounds, a picnic area and the restaurant ‘Das Zoo’ provide a chance to relax and round off the zoo visit perfectly.
Special: Night Zoo in summer
A particular highlight is the Night Zoo in August. On Fridays and Saturdays, the zoo is open until 10 pm. In the balmy summer air, crepuscular and nocturnal animals can be observed particularly well. A varied programme of events, including talks by animal keepers, short guided tours, enrichment activities, quizzes, as well as craft and information stations, creates a unique atmosphere and leaves visitors with unforgettable memories.
A modern zoo with historic roots
The history of Salzburg Zoo dates back to the 15th century, when it was home to an archiepiscopal game reserve. The zoo opened in its current form in 1961 and has developed into a modern, scientifically managed zoo. Today, it is actively involved in national and international species conservation projects. Guided tours, events and holiday programmes provide fascinating insights into the animal world, biodiversity and nature conservation.
