Hallstatt Salt Mines – Experience 7,000 years of history up close
The journey itself is a highlight: the train takes you through idyllic mountain valleys and past the crystal-clear lakes of the Salzkammergut. You then take a boat across Lake Hallstatt directly to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt.
The Salzbergbahn cable car takes you comfortably up to the Hallstatt high valley. From there, a 15-minute walk leads to the entrance of the Hallstatt Salt Mines – the oldest salt mine in the world.

Important information
The Hallstatt Salt Worlds are expected to remain closed until the end of July 2026 due to extensive modernisation work and the construction of the new funicular railway.
One of the most modern funicular railways in Europe is being built – offering greater comfort, faster journey times and even more impressive views.
Until the reopening, the Salzburg and Altaussee sites will be open with extended opening hours.
