Museum Lower Austria – Experience history and nature

In the heart of the cultural district of St. Pölten, the Museum Lower Austria invites you on a fascinating journey through nature and history. The modern museum complex combines two worlds of experience under one roof – the House of Nature and the House of History. Interactive stations, a zoo in the museum with around 40 live, native animal species, exciting special exhibitions and a natural museum garden make your visit a highlight all year round.

The House of Nature – discover over 40 live animal species

Here you will find native animals such as green lizards, tree frogs, catfish and – brand new – two impressive sturgeons, the largest freshwater fish in the world. The animals can be observed at close range in aquariums, terrariums and a formicarium. Commentated feedings and interactive stations provide special moments of discovery.

The House of History – Lower Austria through the ages

In the House of History, you can immerse yourself in key themes of Lower Austrian and Central European history. Personal memorabilia, multimedia presentations and immersive rooms bring historical developments to life.

Current exhibitions

Animals of the night (until 27.02.2027) While people either rest or party at night, many animals and plants are particularly active during the time when there is little light. They come out of their hiding places, start to eat, swarm, smell and reproduce. Which animals take advantage of these night-time opportunities? How have they adapted to the darkness? What abilities do they possess? Children of the war - growing up between 1938 and 1955 (until 17.01.2027) The exhibition focuses on contemporary witnesses and their memorabilia. Different realities of life in that era become visible: it is about children from victim families as well as children from perpetrator families. It is about children from rural and urban areas, from different social milieus and from different backgrounds. Childhood at this time was characterized by uncertainty and hardship, but after 1945 also by the first signs of a new beginning. City + country = 40. twelve stations through time (20.5. to 1.11.2026) In 1986, St. Pölten became the provincial capital of Lower Austria by referendum. At ten central locations in the city, the outdoor exhibition shows how the city and province have changed over the past four decades. Contemporary images illustrate this change. The exhibition starts and ends at the Museum Niederösterreich and the Stadtmuseum St. Pölten.
